In Ludlow, the area between State Street and the Chicopee River used to be a large mill complex run by Ludlow Manufacturing Associates. In 2019, most of the tracks were still in place (according to this map), but in 2025, most of the track has been taken up. Some of the old mill buildings are apartments now and there is a former fabrication building (mill building #44) which is now a Tandem Bagel Cafe and bakery facility.
Ludlow had a depot, which was a part of the Boston & Albany's Athol branch, north of the manufacturing ass'ts, but there is nothing left of it. (Windsor St, as seen in maps below) Philip Johnson, author of The Hampden Railroad: The Greatest Railroad that Never Ran, has helped me with some of the details on the railroads that ran through Ludlow. Thanks so much for reaching out, Phil! According to him, most of the mill buildings were once used for storage of jute and other related supplies. A photo he took is featured here of the still-standing engine shed. In 1939, the depot tracks still run through the area, but by 1947, they had been reduced to a spur. A bridge carried B&A trains over the Chicopee River into the mills. The bridge is also still standing, although, it is falling apart. << Ludlow Depot spur was roughly 1.7mi east of Indian Orchard Station >> |

1912 :: A detailed map of the mill area in Ludlow
1939 :: The depot along the river was in full swing. Both rail lines seen are labeled Boston & Albany RR. The northern track seems to be a spur from Springfield (west) which veers north to the east of the pictured map selection then ends along the Chicopee line at Red Bridge Rd. The depot connects to the southern track. 1947: All tracks are still labeled B&A. 1969 :: All tracks are now labeled Penn Central. |
