Basis
I found a Piko Mogul available for an incredible price in August 2025. The best part was that it already had RailPro installed, my control system of choice! My intention is to re-finish the exterior of the engine to replicate a late-1800's mogul from the Eastern Railroad of Massachusetts. Eastern had at least 5 mogul engines before 1900 that were all leased to the Boston & Maine, according to this document. I am choosing to replicate #10 "Boston". (Early on, railroads would name their engines. The practice of numbering them consistently came later.) The above photo, found via Google, is going to be my basis for the lettering on the tender.
Adjustments Made
Since the engine already had RailPro installed when I bought it, the only reason I had to open it up was to figure out the battery situation. It did not come with a charger. Otherwise, everything I'm planning to do is external. (Having said that, one still needs to take an engine apart to re-paint, in my opinion.) I decided to do minimal repainting on this one, and hopefully only re-letter the engine. This choice may not be the most historically accurate, but I have no idea what color Eastern RR's engines were and I really like the paint job that this engine came with.
